In Seth Godin’s piece called “Getting Picked,” I was reminded of our society’s culture and mindset towards this subject. As a student and teenager, being picked is at the forefront of my mind. I am constantly worried about being picked by my friends, my teachers, and eventually by colleges. Our world is hyper-focused on success in an external form rather than internally. The best successes for people often come with internal revelations or self-discoveries rather than outside approval from others or achievements. Finding ways to be happy with yourself rather than relying on others to “pick” you is so much more satisfying, at least it is in my experience. My mom constantly tells me to be myself and not care what others think. It is impossible to completely block out outside judgement, but I try my best to pick myself rather than have others pick me.

This piece of writing also reminded me of one of my generations’ terms for a girl who acts out around boys so that they might “pick” her: a “pick me” girl. It is somewhat of a derogatory term towards those who recreate themselves to please others. I think it is sad that this is what our culture and society has created. I am going to try my best to pick myself in the future, and help others do the same.
